Monday, June 5th, 2006. Two minutes with Douglas Wilcox.
SeaPaddler published today a very nice interview with Doctor Douglas Wilcox, my beacon for all things Scottish. This man of impeccable paddling tastes had led me in the righteous path that takes into a training week in the Isle of Skye. God providing, I shall prove his tips on native redheads to be of inestimable value.
The interview shows just a little of his fine humour.

I never got to the outside that day. My attempt to climb a steep face was too futile and the wave picked me up and accelerated me backwards until the stern dug in and I was pitchpoled backwards taking out another two paddlers on the way. I learned to make 4 attempts to roll that time and paddled in to some small applause from an old lady walking her dog on the beach.
Douglas :o)
I was glad to find the interview in Seapaddler's newletter. I agree wholeheartedly with your prediction about kayak design in some years from now. I also enjoyed the anecdote on your most embarrassing moment. Of these, I have a large selection myself.
It is a good idea to note that your photo shows Cailean MacLeod in the high, dumping surf. His skills deserve admiration. It is amazing the preparation and training that he is taking for his Level 5 coach award. As I see it, when he feels ready, he should try for the space program. It should not be much harder.
As to the space program comment, well preparing for the BCU Coach 5 assessment is a long and often complicated road and at the end of day a stab into space as there is no real defined standard at this level. The only BCU award without a defined syllabus....
I showed the club's coach the whole sequence of photos. He scratched his head. He paused. He frowned. He pointed his finger at the screen with squinted eyes. Then again.
I like to give him hard times.
